Discussion

Time Machine volumes _MUST_ be encrypted.

Fix

. Go to System Settings -> Time Machine
. Click *Select Disk*
. Select existing Backup Disk under *Available Disks*
. Click *Encrypt Backups*
. Click *Use Disk*
