Authentication
Control
Two types of authentication services can be provided using cryptography: integrity authentication and source authentication.
• An integrity authentication service is used to verify that data has not been modified, i.e., this service provides integrity protection.
• A source authentication service is used to verify the identity of the user or system that created information (e.g., a transaction or message). Several cryptographic mechanisms may be used to provide authentication services. Most commonly, digital signatures or message authentication codes are used to provide authentication; some key-agreement techniques also provide an authentication service. When multiple individuals are permitted to share the same source authentication information (such as a password or cryptographic key), it is sometimes called role-based authentication. See [FIPS140] .
