Title
MACs Using Block Cipher Algorithms
Control
[SP800-38B] defines the CMAC mode: a mode that can be used to compute a MAC using approved block cipher algorithms, such as AES and TDEA. [ SP 800-38D ] defines the GMAC mode that can be used with AES. The key and block size used to compute a MAC based on a block cipher algorithm depends on the algorithm used. If the same block cipher is used for both encryption and MAC computation in two separate cryptographic operations (e.g., using an encryption mode from [SP800-38A] and a MAC computed as specified in [SP800-38B]), then the same key shall not be used for both the MAC and encryption operations. However, some modes of operation specified in the [SP800-38] series provide both encryption and integrity protection using a single key.
