Apple today released patches for 304 vulnerabilties. This number is still in line with prior Apple updates, and comes just about a month after the last apple update. Noteworthy Issue: CVE-2026-86950: This is an already exploited vulnerability in CoreGraphics, and was patched originally a month ago. This month's update delivers the corresponding patches for iOS 18. No new vulnerability is marked as already exploited. Other Interesting issues: CVE-2026-86990: A malicious app may access the camera without user permissions. CVE-2026-28864: A local attacker may gain access to user's Keychain items…

Looking for a Language [Guest Diary], (Wed, Oct 21st)
[This is a Guest Diary by Jeffray Spence, an ISC intern as part of the SANS.edu BACS program] Around Here, we start our day with coffee, but our day does not begin until we have our data...So much data. Where to even begin? When approaching a massive dataset, such as those from a DShield SIEM Honeypot, the first step is to actually find something to analyze. As for myself, I usually go looking for something that makes me go; "Huh." Today we will be walking through a starting approach with Kibana Discover to search out embedded language preferences in webtraffic, then we will use this as a sta…

(Reliable)? php2shell exploitability, (Fri, Oct 23rd)
Yesterday everyone was running around like crazy (me included :) because of the php2shell vulnerability. However, after looking closely at some published PoC's - and there is an unbelievable amount of AI generated - erm, slop - it looks like building a universal, reliable, one click exploit is quite difficult (unless I'm missing something, so please do let me know). The PoC's that have been released so far have several pre-requirements and are almost cheating. First, in order to have a clean initial state, the one PoC that makes sense sends a POST HTTP request with a number of small fields (3…

PHP Vulnerability Wrap-Up, (Fri, Oct 23rd)
This morning, we returned to Infocon Green. As usual, we are raising the Infocon to alert you to emerging situations requiring immediate attention. PHP fit that description. By now, you either know about it, or you probably never will, so it is time to go back to "business as usual". Many vendors have released patches for the vulnerability in sync with PHP.net, showing that the coordinated vulnerability disclosure worked and achieved its goal of providing tested and working patches in a timely manner. Some vendor(s) not playing by the rules and leaking details early is unfortunate but should…

Critical PHP Vulnerability (CVE-2026-109618, CVE-2026-109619) [infocon yellow], (Wed, Oct 21st)
PHP.net announced that it will release a critical update today. We decided to change the infoCon to YELLOW due to the widespread use of PHP, the expected severity of the flaw (CVSS 9.4), and the availability of early PoC exploits before the patch became available. Various vendors have released bulletins listing products that must be patched for this vulnerability. For example: Cisco https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-php-october26-Jj384Daq OPNSense https://x.com/opnsense/status/2112985458514756087 PFSense https://forum.netgate.com/topic/2015…

Orphaned VBA Projects Inside DWG Files: YARA Rule, (Sun, Oct 18th)
Here is the YARA rule I used to detect "Orphaned VBA Projects Inside DWG Files". rule autocad_orphaned_vba_project { strings: $a = "AC10" $b = {D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1} $c = "[Host Extender Info]" ascii condition: $a at 0 and uint32(0x24) == 0 and $b and $c } A VirusTotal retrohunt with this rule gave me only 2 detections: 09d4607941e458f6dbb6be17825641d863c0b37c185027984e137d8a67e919d8 3310c1a9bfe6115e49d8ac372cef5f460850da05138340107e66b958a6b5bca6 Didier Stevens Senior handler blog.DidierStevens.com (c) SANS Internet Storm Center. https://isc.sans.edu Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommer…

Small Agents, Smaller Blast Radius: Controlling What AI Can Do, (Fri, Oct 16th)
I believe the cybersecurity industry may be approaching AI security the wrong way. AI agents are becoming more powerful every day. Systems like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok can write and execute code, use command shells, browse the web, call APIs, interact with MCP servers, and access enterprise data. Yet much of the industry is taking these extraordinarily powerful, general-purpose agents and trying to make them safe by building cages around them. We add containers, policy layers, monitoring, guardrails, and humans in the loop. I think that’s backwards. If the companies building these models st…

Panchan's Mining Island [Guest Diary], (Wed, Oct 14th)
[This is a Guest Diary by Zachary Norwood, an ISC intern as part of the SANS.edu BACS program] Crypto mining malware has been active and spreading across the internet for quite some time now. Moreover, the DShield honeypot picked up a worm that self-propagates through a plethora of means. One of them is stealing SSH keys after it gains access to a system. Furthermore, it also leverages a rootkit to maintain access to infected systems. One would hope that threat actors would have moved on past this worm by now. However, due to its rudimentary design and its effectiveness, they have had no reas…

Orphaned VBA Projects Inside DWG Files, (Wed, Oct 14th)
Years ago I wrote diary entries about VBA code stored inside AutoCAD drawing files (.dwg). In a nutshell: the VBA code is stored inside an OLE file, that is embedded inside the DWG file. You can do a brute-force search for the embedded OLE file, or you can follow a pointer inside the header of the DWG file. I wrote a small Python script (autocad.py) for this second case. It looks at a 32-bit pointer at position 0x24 inside the DWG file. This points to a 16-byte long header, followed by the embedded file. This 16-byte long header contains the length of the embedded file. You use the script tog…

Microsoft today released patches for 1,417 vulnerabilities. 76 of these vulnerabilities are rated critical, with 7 critical vulnerabiilties requiring no customer actions. One vulnerability was disclosed before today's patch Tuesday, and one is already exploited. CVE-2026-96951: An already exploited Windows Shell Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability. This vulnerabliity allows bypassing the "Mark of the Web" making it easier to exeucte code by sending a malicious message to a user via e-mail or instant messaging. The victim will still have to open the file. CVE-2026-108398: This vulnerability,…

Why TLP should not replace your internal information classification, (Sat, Oct 10th)
The Traffic Light Protocol (TLP)[1], which is now in its second incarnation, is a wonderful standard that enables one to easily communicate whether information may be shared further (and if so, how far). That being said, I've noticed a somewhat unfortunate trend in a number of organizations that try to fit TLP into a niche it was never supposed to occupy by attempting to use its labels as a replacement for traditional internal information classification schemes. At first glance, this may seem quite reasonable. After all, TLP is a well-known standard, and it defines a simple set of labels for…

Reconstructing AI Agent Activity: Two New Scripts for Forensic Review, (Thu, Oct 8th)
We just did a major update to FOR577 and added a lot of new material on day 5 about investigating AI usage in incident response. In the new material we dicsuss 8 of the most popular AI coding assistants and agents including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, Copilot, Warp, Windsurf, and Qwen Code. I've been using Claude Code and a little bit of Codex, but I also have recently been playing with OpenCode and am setting up Hermes. I decided to figure out where the chat history was in OpenCode and where any Hermes evidence might be located. I’ve added two new Python scripts to my GitHub repo…

Scans for Atlassian vulnerablity (CVE-2026-21589), (Wed, Oct 7th)
On October 5th, Atlassian published patches for multiple products to fix an "Arbitrary File Access" vulnerability [CVE-2026-21589]. An attacker can read arbitrary files in the web application's directory, potentially exposing sensitive information such as configuration files. This directory traversal vulnerability is a little bit different from the textbook case. Atlassian products replace slashes with the pattern "::". To avoid this issue, but may, in some cases, undo this escape to access files. Watchtowr has a great write-up with all the details and proof-of-concept URLs demonstrating the…
